To the attention of the information media and of the web-surfers
CENTURY AND MILLENNIUM QUACKS
- 2000 CERTIFICATE - CHALLENGES TO THE MAGICIANS
Also this year, as is our custom, we assigned the recognitions
On The Citizens' Side and On The Quacks' Side. Approaching
the millenium end we decided to signal:
1) those who, in the century and in the millenium, stended
out for their peculiar theories;
2) those who challenged magicians and seers.
QUACK OF THE MILLENNIUM: NOSTRADAMUS, French prophet of XIV
century - motivation: his quatrains are always interpreted
after the events and adjusted to fit them (afterwards), and
never before (beforehand).
QUACK OF THE CENTURY: URI GELLER, self-styled Israeli "sensitive"
- motivation: for 30 years he affirmed to have paranormal
powers (folding the metals with the thought, practising the
psychic photography, etc.), while he has always used conjurer
disguises.
MOST DISAVOWED THEORY: ASTROLOGY - motivation: because the
astrologers, in theirs calculations, regularly mistake forecasts
and ignore the changing of the equinoxes which, in the last
millennium, determined the shifting of the constellations
and therefore, of the dates of the "signs of the zodiac".
Es. March 20 - April 20 is not the Ram which is background
of the sun any more, but half Pisces and half Aquarius (and
so backwards for all the others signs).
CERTIFICATE "BY THE CITIZENS' SIDE" 2000: CICAP
(Italian control committee of paranormal affirmations) - motivation:
having accomplishedly informed the public opinion about the
disguises used by magicians and healers.
CERTIFICATE "BY THE QUACKS' SIDE" 2000: MAURIZIO
COSTANZO - motivation: having promoted and credited every
week, on Canale 5, quacks and guru which evade tax and abuse
of popular credulity for economic purposes, heavly damaging
families.
CHALLENGES OF THE CENTURY: the Hungarian HARRY HOUDINI and
the American illusionist JAMES RANDI has offered money to
any medium or seers, if able to show any paranormal phenomenon.
CHALLENGE OF THE MILLENNIUM: the Italian conjurer ALFREDO
BARRAGO bets, for 50.000 euros (100 millions of lire), that
magicians and fortune-tellers will never be able to modify
events nor foresee the future.
